Artificial lures are my preferred bait for all species of fish. There’s something about tricking a fish into trying to eat a piece of lead, plastic and/ or steel that interests me. Generally speaking, I could have caight just as many fish by using a bare gold colored hook. Not that I caught a lot of fish. But, the little orange jig head I used allows for a bit more visibility underwater and it gets the hook down to the bigger fish before the little ones have a chance to grab it up. Not that I caught any monsters. Bluegills are my favorite species of fish for the table as they are primarily terrestrial feeders, meaning they eat bugs not other fish. Now, anyone who has observed bluegills knows they indeed do eat fish, but, they eat less fish than say yellow perch or Northern pike and that makes them, according to science, much cleaner and safer to eat. Fish that eat other fish accumulate toxins like dioxin and PCBs in their bodies which are transferred to humans upon ingestion.
