A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Los Angeles, United States by TravelPod blogger Aaroncathryn titled "California" Aaroncathryn’s travel blog entry: "Hello blog watchers, Well well well……..California was pretty awesome! We’re currently sitting in LA airport waiting for our flight to New Zealand, plenty of time to kill so ideal time to write our first blog. We flew into LA airport and after a ridiculous taxi ride (turns out rush hour traffic in LA matches the M25) we arrived at our first motel in Hollywood. Not much to look at and not ideal given there was a party outside our window until 4am. We picked up the hire car the following morning hoping for sunshine and headed for Santa Monica. For those of you who were envious of our trip to the California sunshine you’ll be pleased to hear that the weather was pretty terrible. We made the most of it by walking down through Venice Beach and a wander around the shopping district which turned out to be pretty painful given all the great clothes but lack of space in our bags! We met up with Polly and Matt on the 3rd day and got some fast food whilst checking out the walk of fame on Hollywood Boulevard. The following day we drove to Universal Studios to do the tour of the studios and go on some of the rides. We were all looking very green after the Simpsons Ride! We then saddled up for our drive up the coast and Route 1. The weather was still pretty terrible at this point so the scenery wasn’t quite what we …

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Margaret River, Australia by TravelPod blogger Nickcam titled "Chilling out with our family." Nickcam’s travel blog entry: "Nice to be away from a wet & cold Melbourne & back to a place where the sun shines most of the time. We are here to stay for 2 weeks before spending a further 2 weeks in Albany, some 300kms south of Margaret River – we welcome the respite after continually packing up and moving on as we have been doing for the past 3 months! Margaret River is a lovely, heavily wooded, small town next to the stretch of coast where there is some of the best surfing in all Australia – my son, Ewan, is in his element here and rarely misses the opportunity to hit the break at some unearthly hour in the morning. If you are a surfer, then here is the place to live! There are plenty of beautiful beaches for those who want to paddle & swim rather than surf. Having said that the sun shines most of the time does not mean that it is hot here! The house my son rents is south facing and therefore very chilly most of the time caused by the wind blowing icy weather over its bows – it is warmer out than in, on most days! Margaret River (MR) is known nationally & internationally as a top wine area and you can see this by traveling along Cave Road & Bussell Highway, the two main roads running parallel to each other from Dunsborough/Busselton in the north to Augusta in the south with MR in between. There are something like 83 wineries …

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Flagler Beach, United States by TravelPod blogger Jodieandandy titled "TWO YEARS ON THE ROAD!!!" Jodieandandy’s travel blog entry: "Thursday, November 12th We faked out Hurricane Ida by zipping up into Alabama for two days staying at Dothan’s Flying Jay Truck Plaza where we got super rained on. We did laundry, took showers, filled up with diesel and got groceries. All set for whatever Ida wanted to throw at us…. She changed her course from heading straight into Florida to breaking into multiple tropical storms heading into the Carolinas. We slipped right under her and headed straight for Flagler Beach. Arriving two days early for our reservations we stayed the first night in the Palm Coast Walmart’s parking lot. The next morning we got into a great site at Gamble Rogers State Park. They reserve a few sites for "drive ups" (a site that one cannot reserve ahead) and we lucked out!. Weather was still showing the results of Ida as the surf pounded the shore!! The tides were higher than we have ever seen them here, right up to the stairs and into the dunes. The waves were coming in multiple layers or sets so it was chaotic turbulence with huge waves for this area. Andy tried his luck with fishing and found the easterly winds were blowing in too much sea weed to be able to fish the surf. November 15 The winds have let up and Andy is catching fish like crazy! Even staying up past 9pm was a no no! We slobbed about and finally made it out to breakfast at mid-day taking in the recommended Decadence breakfast across the street. Sadly the weather was grey and misty like UK in Spring but not so cold. The breakfast was pretty epic though, clearly they think a lot about their food. Also the town, for a Saturday, is nearly empty. Where is everyone? They are used to the weather so there just must be massively fewer peeps. Later a lady in the fudge shop said the south island is about as big as England but with only 1 in 60 people so I guess that puts it in perspective. Actually everyone is very friendly here and surprisingly know a lot about the UK. The fudge shop lady’s daughter married an air force bloke and lived in Biggin Hill (and other places), the tram driver worked in Arnos Grove for 10 years teaching in the 70s, the tram ticket selling lady came from Cambridge, the guy who checked in our luggage yesterday was from Lancashire (I mistook his accent at first for Yorkshire. One was a large, fuzzy brown spider on the bedroom wall. I suspect he is a Brown Recluse; a spider to be avoided. We left it. With large gaps everywhere in the structure we didn’t even discuss how futile it would be to remove him. The second surprise was a 3 inch brown frog on the bathroom wall. He was very ugly but happily posed for several pictures before we turned off the light and let him have his peace. Strangely enough, I slept without concern for my safety. Perhaps because of the visual barrier of the mosquito netting which fit snugly around the bed. My last words to Jeff before sleep were, "I’m so going to Paris next year." He laughed. So for the night I was awake alot. It was mercifully cool and the drone of the cicadas was nice, but I kept wondering when it would be morning – no night electricity therefore no clock. At 5:30 a man from the camp (they are all men – no women) knocked on our door to wake us. I had a quick shower and we sat down to a delicious breakfast at 6 am. The guests sat at 1 table with eggs, mangos and toast. The workers sat at another table with something that looked like porridge. For the morning activity Jorge and his assistant, Pedro, took us on a 1 mile hike to a treehouse platform. The platform was 30 meters …

This is where you go out in a boat to the middle of shark infested waters and they drop a metal cage into the water and you sort of snorkel about inside the cage while great white sharks swim around and feed off of the fish bait within feet from the edge of the cage. Sounds exciting right? Well, after some reading, Rachel and I discovered that one of the downsides of this is that the sharks are beginning to show signs of equating humans with food. This has lead to a sharp increase in the number of great white attacks on humans in recent years in the South African region. With both of us being scuba divers and truly enjoying life under the sea, neither of us could really get too excited about supporting this. And while we were in doubt, I came up with an alternative – a road trip! The South African coast, heading from Cape Town and down towards Port Elizabeth, is supposed to be some of the most beautiful landscape in the world. And with our budget under some level of scrutiny at the moment, we agreed that a half-day experience of shark diving was not worth the cost, especially when we could rent a car and drive …

A juvenile Tick will climb up the nearest blade of grass, tree branch or any such elevated object and, once settled and comfy, will effectively hit the off switch and shut its body down. A Tick will sit in this manner for as much as 15 years without sign of life (some very patient nerdy types have checked and it is true!), and for all intents and purposes the flow of time has stopped completely for our little blood-sucking friends. The sciency-types call this complete lack of stimulus or marked points in time ‘absence of accented moments’. The only thing that will get a tick rocking is the sweet, mouth-watering scent of mammal sweat, which will get the little fella on his hind legs and pouncing blindly over vast distances toward the offender. If it hits anything that feels remotely like skin it digs its legs right in and buries its head as deep as possible to get a hold of some blood. For the Tick, blood and time are now flowing and he is as wildly happy as a labrador loose on a beach. Our days and lives as human beings tend to be a little fuller than that of the average Tick. As children, we find every new experience, sight and sound worthy of comment. As we get older, we find less …

The capital of this island is Mahon, and it’s port is magnificent. We enter a beautiful little secluded bay that was home to the pirates of the Mediterranean, and now a playground for the European rich. . Menorca being a small little harbor in the Eastern Mediterranean was a valued acquisition. Therefore over the last few 1000 years it has been in the hands if the Etruscans, Romans, Muslims, Spanish, French, Italians, and now the Spanish again. We arrive about 9 AM and set off for an island tour. We first go to the far side (Northwest) and visit a beautiful little fishing village, Fornells (For-neice). I could definitely spend some time here. Next we visit the highest point on the island, where the first Catholic missionaries built the first church for worship and a massive fort for protection. It’s becoming evident that were going to see a lot of Catholic churches. We return to the harbor for some calamari and fried sardines. mmmm We’re back on to the ship for the afternoon sail and the evenings fare. Great food on the Wind Surf." Way behind, and stuffing chocolates into any space I can find. Don’t know if it’s the weather or the fact that my travels are coming to an end (more on that in the blog), but I just haven’t felt inspired to write. Which is a weird and disconcerting feeling, since writing is a passion of mine and what I hope to base some sort of career on upon my return to the real world. Hm. I hate to put you through this kind of "summary" update, but it seems the least painful way (for both you and I) to bring you up to speed. You don’t have to suffer through 19 screens of writing, and I don’t have to write it. When I last signed off Fab and I were headed to tiny Gili Air to hang out for a few days. BLISS! Alex thought it was cool but Steph wasn’t so keen on the frat party style mattresses strewn out across the balcony. They’re living like hobos she said. I think the cockroach in the bathroom was the final straw. Anyway, we stayed for two nights and it was ok really. There was lots of wildlife like howler monkeys and iguanas and it was a great location for exploring the beach. The river next to the hostel has small crocs in it. We moved to Tamarindo Backpackers, a hostel further from the beach, but cleaner and with a pool. The first few weeks we were here was so hot we needed somewhere to cool down. We made a few good friends and, as we stayed here while going to the Spanish school for two weeks, they moved us into an attic room with a tv and a big fridge for the same price. They made sure that the place was silent after 11pm so it was hard to have a late evening in the hostel without having to leave. Leon323′s travel blog entry: "Today was a busy day, going from Gisborne to tauranga with a stop en route at Whakatane (pronounced Fa-kah-tah-nay). The trip began with some winding and twisting roads, which eventually led to great hills, covered in emerald green and then followed the river fro a good hour. After that, the road turned up the coast and followed a bee-line for Whakatane. The legend upon which the city is named and a famous statue appears, states that a Maori war canoebegan to drift, when a high spirited maiden named Wairaka took the oars (forbidden for her to do) and paddled back to safety. Hence the name Whakatane, or to act like a man. Her statue stands predominately on the beach head, commemorating this brave act. Before arriving there, I passed signs warnign of ducks and kiwis in the road. The real issue were the cattle who had "jumped the fence" and a little lamb I saw while taking a pix, who likewise had done so. Fearing me the lamb ran out into the road, just as an oncoming bus was rounding the corner. Luckily it braked in time to avoid an ugly scene and one which I would have felt responsible for. The lamb then dashed into a field with an open gate to hopeful safety and greener pastures. This area is one the greenest places on the north island, with gentle and then not so gentle rolling hills. It took another forty-five minutes or so to get to Kedah, LangkawI. Kedah was nice but built for the 5star package holiday group. We knew we wanted to be on the south-west of the Island in Pantai Cenang where all the back-packer accommodation was. We didn’t have anywhere booked because we wanted to give "rockn up" a go. We got swarmed by taxi drivers offering us low, low accommodation. Used a pay phone and booked The Rainbow Lodge out of the Lonely Planet Guide. We settled in after paying heed to all the rules of the hostel, I guess you can only keep a place that nice by being a bit uptight! Laziness prevailed and we ordered a pizza from domino’s, there was a bit of a cock up but it all paid off in the end because we got an extra pizza for no charge. We had a good chat with friends Jenny (Burnley) and Jack (Wandsworth), watching channel 7s fabulous Monday night line-up including Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs. We tried to get up early the following day but I failed miserably and eventually crawled out from under the duvet at 6:50am. We rushed about getting ourselves sorted for our trip to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, and successfully caught our bus down to the ferry. We were a bit confused by the lack of other backpackers and found out why at the dock – we’d been booked onto a different tour so instead of ‘Cooldingos’ we were on the family friendly ‘Fraser Explorer’. We …

Time to play catch up – in a huge rush! We’re about to go catch a bus to Hampi, about 12 hours away by bus. Since I last wrote, I have slept at a train station on a bench and was woken up by a gang of dogs, jungle birds, as well as pigeons in the roof cooing to the tune of something that sounded like "emilio! emilio! emilio!". I have also not had coffee for two Days which is a record. There was a guy on the train in the middle of the lush Konkan Railway with an Offspring cellphone ringtone that he decided was cool to blare on speakerphone and listen to, among other bad songs, the whole train ride. Kingfisher beer is great, as well as the calamari here at The Mango Tree bar mmm…. Anyways haha :) it’s been a fun time so far!! Rented two honda motorbikes for 3 1/2 Days and drove all the way down south to Margao (only about 30 km but it takes forever on the bike and in the kind of traffic and cows we had to deal with – yes there really are cows all over the road!) and found and AWESOME beach called Varca Beach – it was sooooooooo gorgeousssss…. we got toasted but it was fun playin in the water and relaxing in the sun! having the bikes has been the best… we get to drive down these awesome rural roads, seeing goats standing in the weirdest places, cows and people. We went to see two movies yesterday …

Chrisandkris’s travel blog entry: "(all references to photos will become clear once we add said photos – experiencing technical difficulties) Bom dia! When we last left you we were researching ferry prices for Morocco., Alas, they were a wee bit more expensive then we expected so we have decided to travel there by plane at the end of our trip without the Cream Crusader (formerly known as White Lightning). From Tarifa, we drove to a town outside of Cadiz as there is a lack of campgrounds outside of Seville. Our plan was to see a flamenco show before we went over into Portugal. Back in Granada, we had met a cordial Englishman who somewhat excitedly shared a secret he had obtained by candlelight in a backroads Spanish bar. From out of his pocket, hands quivering with anticipation, he drew a crumpled handkercheif on which he had scribbled four words, barely legible (Jerez de la Frontera). He told us that this tiny town, apparently undiscovered by tourists, was the best place to see flamenco in all of Spain but to guard this secret with our lives! In actual fact, when we got to our campground near Jerez, there were hundreds of flyers (in various languages) advertising the many different flamenco shows on offer in nearby Jerez. We felt sad for the man, who was no doubt somewhere in Jerez looking down dark alleyways, hearing out …

I took the train to Lithgow and then started to hitchhike. It didn’t took long for me to catch two rides with coal miners to Windamere lake. After setting up the camp and cooking dinner over camp fire I started fishing. The first night was not successful. On the second day I changed tactics and tried some bottom fishing with worms instead of casting lures from the shore. Around midday I hooked into my first fish. After a minute or two of fighting the fish proved to be too powerful for my light spinning outfit and pulled itself into some snag and broke the line. Luckily I got a small half kg catfish in the evening to save my day. On Saturday I was heading towards SW to Mt. Canobolas which is a 1395 m high non-active volcano. It has been non-active for very long time and it was probably about 500 m higher than it is nowadays. But it is still the highest point between Blue Mountains and Australias western coast 3500 km away. I camped on the foothills of the mountain and it was bloody cold at night. The first sunrays in the morning were very welcome and I started my hike up to get some warmth into my frozen body. The views and valleys and cliffs were great. I also found some delicious looking berries which I couldn’t resist. I ate …

As I mentioned, Larry was off to his charter deep-sea fishing trip in the morning (on the Sea Wife II — check its site on the internet –(www.fishkona.org it was a great experience for Larry!), but he was the only one on the boat who caught a fish, a mahi-mahi, so he came home with about 20 lbs. of fresh fish for us to eat at night. After he got back, we went out to get lemons for cooking the fish that night (we already had butter) and we ran a few errands on the trip. The Kona International Market was a bust – nothing was open when we went there. Which was just as well, because my knee was really bothering me. I could hardly walk unless I went up on my tiptoes with my left foot so I could swing the straight, stiff right leg forward – I felt like Dennis Weaver’s Festus from "Gunsmoke." About sundown, we went down to the shore at our resort to take pictures and videos of the sunset. That was lovely. Today (Tuesday) was MUCH better! Since I still couldn’t get the wound wet, ergo we couldn’t go snorkeling, and since Larry wanted to see the Volcanoes National Park, we headed south, stopping by Kona Country Club to make a tee-time for tomorrow. My knee felt MUCH better this morning, though still a little swollen …

Ok ok now my rant is over (just had to get that of my chest) I will tell you all about it. I should really start where I left off in Bangkok leaving for Malaysia. I flew into Kuala Lumpur and enjoyed seeing the sights like the KL tower, the Lake Park, Malay History Museum, the markets and riding the sky train, but we decided to make the most of my week and a half by traveling to the east coast and visiting a small resort by the see called Cherating. The beaches are amazing, the surf was great and there were only a handful of tourists. Most were locals or people on a weekend trip from KL so we had a great time finding out about Malaysia and relaxing . They made us feel so welcome by cooking lovely food for us, taking us sea fishing ( where I caught the biggest fish of the day for the bbq!) and exploring the mangroves, surfing, horse riding and of course sharing a few whiskey and cokes. It was great but after a week we had flights to catch so we made our way back to KL and then on to Singapore. As I enjoyed Malaysia so …

Hopefully I can raise the quality of entries back to its Miltonian perch once again. After so much time spent in the mountains of Patagonia it was almost inevitable that a voice would begin somewhere in my thoughts questioning just what I was doing. Why when this was summer, a real bona fide South American summer, was I spending so much of it in areas that experience the same temperatures that I would be experiencing back in a winterbound England? Perhaps it is just the medication wearing off, but the voice won the argument and I jumped on a bus across the Andes into Chile. The journey was actually quite interesting as I had heard quite a bit about the impact of the Andes on the Chilean and Argentinian landscapes. You see the range basically acts like a great barrier to clouds and the rain they carry travelling from the Pacific across into Argentina. As a result Argentinian Patagonia is a dry desert landscape for the most part and the mountains are a mess of shallow scrub and wirey lenga forest. As we passed over into the Chile the difference was immediately apparent. There were more ferns and thicker forests. Grassland stretched out as …

Don’t know if it was auspicious or not, but Rhiannon (unharmed) was hit in the shoulder by a small flying fish, another Nat Geo moment. We piled on the boat after breakfast, heading for some more snorkelling at the island of Ankazobamarina, used by Italians as THE luxury resort of the Nosy Be area. It was on the way there that my flagging manhood was restored by bagging a Spanish Mackerel, last of the boys to catch dinner, and it was the smallest, but still immensly satisfying. Dad, if you read this, you’d love the fishing here, no bait, primitive and damaged gear but plenty of fish. If I can reel one in then anyone can! The island of Ankazobamarina is off-limits to non-guests so we attached ourselves to a fixed anchor off the south side where the rocks and beach make sunbathing undesireable, but the snorkelling is good. Sian and Rhiannon got their turns with the turtles and everyone had a good old paddle (with the exception of myself, too obsessed with photos of buzzards, landscapes and nautical themes. This weekend was my first trip into the bush as they say down here. Me and three other guys went tramping in Fiordlands National Park down along the very southern coast of the South Island. We left thursday after class and camped at the trail head that night. At first light, which here is about 8:30 we started hiking. The first hour was on a groomed Track which came to a set of stairs, but there turned out to be alot of stairs going all the way down to the beach. For the first half of day one we tramped on the beach, with the spray rising up from the surf creating a rainbow. Then we got to the lower hills which are rainforest so we hiked through ferns and palm trees, over wire bridges, all in all very pretty. About half way through the 8 hr day we got to the mountian hike, which went up 800m along the spine of the mountain, which made the trail really narrow, and at times just rock. That night we spent in a hut at the top of this mountain, and in the morning we woke up to see the sunrise, along with these mountain parrots that were quite annoying. The second day we hiked along the ridge on this range, and got some awsome shots overlooking the fiordlands and the ocean. We had on and off rain that day so the decent was a bit muddy but scenic. At the bottom of the mountain we crossed these …

The Peruvians there are overly tan with long bleached hair. I am not sure if this sounds ignorant but they looked more Hawaiian than Peruvian to me. Last time I tried surfing was back in 2001. In Máncora, Surf lessons are only 25 soles (about $9) and surf boards can be rented all day for about $7. So, for 4 days straight, all I did was wake up, eat breakfast and spend some quite time with God, then surf in the morning, eat ceviche for lunch and read or play the guitar or just hanging out with the people from the hostel, then surf again in the afternoon, shower, try different amazing Peruvian seafood dishes for dinner, go to a calling store and talk to Ana on the phone, and then come back to the hostel to rest and read some more before falling asleep. The hostel itself was pretty crazy too. It was the biggest hostel in which I had stayed in South America. With a pool, 2 outside bars, a pool table, a pingpong table, a foosball table, and a bunch of hammocks, the hostel seemed more like a small resort town than a backpacker hostel. I met a lot of interesting travelers in Máncora, too. Of them all, two were exceptionally interesting to hang out with. For those that read the start of the blog, there was much worrying about the doing of laundry on my trip. Well not if you’re in Bali there isn’t – 2 trousers, 7 briefs, 6 pairs of socks and 5 t-shirts – all fully cleaned, dried and ironed in 24 hours for less than 5 euro. Now let me put that in context. When in Ireland, I spend about 20 euros on the petrol alone to cart my laundry up the road from Dublin to Newry to Maureen as and when dictates. That’s before throwing in the price of a chinkers out the road from Newry and a bottle of wine. So the yardstick has been set, mum. By the time I get back to the hotel, I’m half the weight I was when starting out and people are lighting cigarettes off me. After rehydration which leads to water shortage in the island and shower with what’s left of what I haven’t consumed, Charlie is there at 12 to pick me up as promised. So far cafe con leche has resulted in – hot water in a cup with a jar of instant coffee and a small pot of milk, hot water in a cup with a thick coffee syrup which you pour into the water and then add milk, a cup of hot milk to which you add instant coffee, black coffee with a jar of milk – we are still yet to receive a white coffee in a cup but will celebrate when that happens.
