To find winter crappie, use your depth finder to look for submerged creek and river channels in 15 to 40 feet of water. What you’re looking for is brush or submerged trees along these channels. Crappie will be holding somewhere in or around that cover. Crappie, like bass and most other species, almost always stage close to some type of cover, and they seem to prefer brush-piles or submerged trees as their cover of choice.
Underwater ledges next to deeper channels may also be holding a few crappie, if there is some type of cover nearby. If a warm front comes through and the temperatures rise for a few days, crappie may begin to move up to flats along the creek channels. If that happens, you may want to go back to slow-trolling, as the fish will be more spread out.
Often during the winter, wind can be a problem for fishermen. If you have a good trolling motor, you can keep your boat positioned over the cover and drop jigs into and around it. I hate fighting the wind, so I usually use an anchor to keep my boat where I want it. When I find the cover on my depth finder, I’ll drop a marker buoy over it, then determine the wind direction. I circle the boat around, and when I’m upwind and off to the side of the buoy, quietly drop my anchor. When it hits bottom, I let the boat drift alongside the marker buoy, and then tie off the anchor rope. I will then be able to concentrate more on fishing than constantly repositioning the boat.
Now that I’m in position, I’m ready to fish. But what bait do I use? Small, lightweight jigs is the answer. Remember that in the cold water, the crappie are moving slower, and they aren’t going to chase a lure very far. So use light jigs and fish them slow. Use a 1/8 or lighter jig on a lightweight or medium-light rod, and if you noted any fish on your depth finder, drop the jig just over them and be ready for a strike.
Move the jig slowly up and down, or use very light twitches. You won’t get the aggressive strikes like you do in the spring and summer, often you will only feel a slight tug or even just a little pressure. This is where the light tackle comes in. Light-weight rods and 4 to 6 pound test line will enable you to feel these subtle strikes. If you know the crappie are there, and your jigs are just not working, try adding a crappie nibble or if you can, tip it with a small minnow.

As an experienced fly angler I have learned many things over the years but there are certain fly Fishing tips for trout that should always be kept in mind. These pointers are basic but also very important and can make the difference between having success and going fishless.
Striving for a drag free drift is vital in many forms of fly Fishing. In both dry fly Fishing and nymph fishing most of the time the fly sound be floating with the current and NOT being altered by current pulling the line or leader, or the fly being slowed by the current holding up the float of the line. Even in streamer fishing the fly should be floating downstream with no action and the fish will take it for a stunned or dead bait fish. And just why is a drag free drift so important? Remember the trout is in its natural environment eating natural insects that are usually floating with the current ( both on the surface and below). To fool them your presentation has to look and act natural to the fish. Think about this – if you were eating a bowl of popcorn, the many popped kernels look all about the same. If one of them was very different, say it was pink, or moving around in the bowl, would you eat that kernel or not?
Another useful fly fishing tip for trout is simply this – do not spook the fish! Your location for fishing will dictate how important this is. On a lake or a large river this is not that vital. But on smaller streams the trout will be rather wary. In crystal clear water, shallow water and slow moving streams this can be very important. Sometimes fish will feel your vibrations from the ground as you walk along the bank. Sudden movements, casting directly over the trout or having your shadow falling on the water can all ruin a fish’s appetite. Don’t “over wade” and go charginginto the middle of the pool where the fish were. Many fishermen make this mistake. Approach with caution and stealth, wade slowly and avoid loud noises and you will dramatically increase your chances of fooling a wary trout.
This may be obvious to some fisherman and never even thought of by others. But this fly fishing tip for trout fishermen is simply to have your equipment well organized. It is well know that the more you fish the more gear you acquire. Heck, isn’t that half the fun? But knowing exactly where every thing is so you can get it in a timely manner is important. Most fly fisherman use a vest with multiple pockets. You should know exactly where everything is and always put it back in its proper place. You may end up with several fly boxes, each with certain times of flies (small dies, larger dries, types of streamers, beadhead nymphs, etc) and you want to be able to find the exact fly you are looking for quickly. Other items such as leaders, insect repellent, small flashlight, strike indicators, etc should all be organized well. Fish landing items such as your net and forceps should be easily reached as you will want them in a hurry after you’ve hooked your big fish!

The state of Alabama is a popular destination for anglers looking to take advantage of the many fishing opportunities as well as the gorgeous scenery. Many fishermen who travel to Atlanta in order to fish find themselves venturing off into the Deep sea where they can try their hand at catching some of the oceans largest species.
Luckily, the weather in Alabama allows for this sort of fishing nearly all year round, still, checking the weather report is always necessary in case there are any storms predicted off the coast.
As soon as you have decided that fishing in Alabama is for you, you may be a bit nervous to set out on something so adventurous without the proper Deep sea fishing tips. Of course, a lot of what you will be doing will be highly dependent on exactly what species of fish you are looking to catch. However, regardless of what kind of fish you are looking for, there will always be some fishing tips that will apply to all of them:
Three methods that will be used most often when fishing the deep sea are bottom fishing, trolling and drift fishing. Select the proper technique according to which fish you will be looking for as well as the fishing gear that is available to you.
Learn your knots and how to tie them. Knowing how to tie your own knots will mean the difference between getting your fish in the boat and watching it slip away right in front of you.
Learn and study as much as possible when it comes to the patterns in the weather and how any changed might affect the behavior of the species of fish that you are looking to catch. This will help you to better locate where the fish will be for the day.
Observe and learn the signs that mean that fish are in the immediate vicinity as this will help you save time searching. Wherever you see birds or driftwood crowded around an area, there will be fish.
Prior to planning an Alabama fishing trip, you must first be sure to acquire the appropriate fishing license while also establishing an understanding of the local regulations and rules pertaining to deep sea fishing and the species you are fishing for. You can easily obtain this information on line or from the local game commissioner.

Tautog, also know as Blackfish, are extremely tough fighters and very sneaky fish that can be difficult to catch. However, they are great on the dinner table. We will go over some useful information about how to catch these fish.
Anchor Retrieval System
A good anchor system uses two ropes, one attached to the front of the anchor, and the usual anchor rope attached to the back of the anchor. The rope attached to the front should have a small buoy on it. When you drop the anchor make sure the ropes don’t wrap each other, as this will defeat the purpose of the second rope. When it comes time to pull the anchor up, motor up carefully to the buoy, bringing in the other rope as you approach, then grap the buoy and pull the anchor in the rest of the way using the buoy rope. This pulls the anchor from the front, pulling it right out o the bottom and any rocks it may have been stuck under.
Boat Handling
It is necessary to anchor the boat over the rocky structure that Tautog prefer. This can sometimes be very difficult, if you don’t get over the structure you wont be catching any fish. Once you get the boat anchored, remember that an area can be fished out, so it is necessary to let out anchor line as you fish to cover new ground. Make sure that you are anchored so that letting out line wll still place you over structure.
Rigging
Tautog like to hide among rock piles and it isn’t unusual to lose a lot of rigs when fishing for them. We use a very simple rig which helps reduce the loss of tackle to a minimum. A simple monofilament leader with a loop is tied onto the line and then a hook with a leader is tied to this length of mono leader, with the hook able to hang down to the level of the loop. Then we tie a small loop with 12lb test mono, these are used to attach the sinker to the leader loop. This lighter sinker loop will break before the main leader does, and it is the sinker that often gets hung up with this rig, since it hangs down below the hook. This way you usually only lose sinkers.
Bait
We use crabs for bait. It is easy for us to catch them at the dock and is doesn’t matter what kind they are (except for spider crabs, we don’t use them). Most of the time we remove the legs, claws, and cut the crab in half, then remove the upper shell before placing it on the hook. If it is a very large crab we will cut the halves in half and use quarters
Fishing
Let your baited rig down to the bottom. It is necessary to keep the line tight so you may feel the hit, otherwise the bait can be lost with no clue to the fact that there was a bite. If the boat is swinging back and forth, do not let the rig drag across the bottom, this will hang it up for sure. Always lift it off the bottom and let it back down as the boat moves. Banging the sinker on the bottom will make noise which can bring the tautog in to investigate.
The Bite
With Tautog, you will often feel the tap-tap-taps and will want to instantly try to set the hook. This does not usually work, you need to wait until you feel the taps become tugs, then try setting the hook. If the fish is hooked, get him away from the bottom as quickly as you can so he can’t get hung up in the rocks. Remember not to lift the head out of the water as you try to net the fish, this is a good way to lose him.
When to Fish
In the fall when the tautog bite is really on you can catch a lot of fish, and they can be pretty easy to hook. During the spring and summer, they are not so aggressive and tautog fishing can be somewhat frustrating. Late October and early November are usually the best times to fish for them. Time of day is not usually an issue, far more important is tide, which needs to be running for the bite to be on. Slack tide in not usually very good.

Jig fishing for walleye is my favorite way to catch them and spring is my favorite time of year to do it.
I like to find a spot where a river or decent sized stream is flowing into a proven walleye lake.
A fish finder helps put the location on good structure and helps locate the walleye. You want to get fairly close to the river mouth but not so close you can’t set anchor.
You also want to get close to the drop off but not so close you can’t cast a few feet. Weeds should be growing in the shallows before the drop off. This gives walleye a place to hide so they can easily ambush their prey and hopefully your jig or bait.
Usually walleye feed right off the bottom but sometimes they suspend above this area. This is another good reason to use a graph. You don’t want to waste time trying to figure out what depth the walleye suspending.
Once anchored up I like to cast toward the shallow side of the drop off and slowly reel in until my line falls directly down beside the boat.
Then I let my line drop to the bottom and reel up to the depth the walleye are suspending.
It’s a good idea to see how much line one 360 degree crank on the reel draws up before you get in the boat. If it brings in 1 foot of per crank line and the fish are 3 feet off the bottom you slowly reel 3 times around and there you go.
You have to slowly jig or lift your rod tip up and down to display proper presentation as walleye are real finicky about it.
If the walleye are 3 feet off the bottom I set my rig about 1.5 feet off the bottom. I lift my rod tip up about 2 feet then lower it back down. I keep doing this until I get a hit.
You will find you usually feel the hit when you are bringing your rod tip back up. The walleye are actually hitting the jig on its way down. When you lift the rod tip up is when you usually notice the fish is on the bite.
As soon as you feel the slightest bit of resistance you must set the hook, and I mean quickly. If you don’t set the hook immediately you are likely going to miss your walleye.
There are all kinds of jigs on the market. Most work well but color does matter from day to day and even hour to hour.
The jig head color isn’t extremely important but the tail color is. I like to use twister tails on a normal jig head and a little walleye scent don’t hurt.
I find a 3/8 oz jig head works well in a fair current but if the current is somewhat swift I go with a 1/2 oz jig head.
I often attach a spinner to the jig head. It seems to induce more strikes than a plain jig. But you never know if it’s the daily special or not so you just have to try it and see.
Another jig that works great is Northlands’ Mimic Minnow. They come in different sizes.
There is more information about mimic minnows at the main website on this page: Fly In Fishing Gear Checklist.
