1 Bottom painting is a messy job, but it is so expensive to have a professional do the job that it becomes pretty hard not to do it yourself. An added bonus is that you have some idea that the job was done right. Preparation is everything. An owner can attend to other things at the same time such as, regressing sea cocks, polishing the prop, and checking the cutlass bearing.

2 Painting a boat bottom can go fast; it’s the prep and repair that take the time. I would plan three work-hours for every 15 feet of boat prep and one work-hour for every 15 feet of painting.

3 Antifouling boat bottoms can Save you up to 10% of energy required to move your boat through the water and that can be real Money. Copper has been used since the 1700s as a great tool to avoid growths on your boat bottom. And a smooth Teflon-type bottom has a drag coefficient smoother than ice.

4 While some owners like contrasting the previous year’s coating color, I prefer using the same color every time. Then if you have a miss or need to sand an error, the bottom remains looking good.

5 Painting boat bottoms is like painting ceilings. But because boats are outside, often rain or dew can roll down the side onto your wet coating. To avoid water running down the side of the boat onto the bottom, you can put a crease in 2-inch masking tape the long way and stick half to the boat with the lip sticking out. Most of your water should then roll off the tape to the ground rather than flowing around the curve of the boat.

6 Don’t forget that dust can cause major health problems. The asbestos legacy suggests that anywhere there is dust from sanding you should wear a mask or a real respirator. A particulate filter and an organic vapor filter combination works best.

7 For sanding, a random-orbit sander works really well for prep. But a good job can also be done with sanding sponges and iron shaped vibrating sanders. The point of the iron can get at those areas by the keel, rudder, and bottom fittings.

8 It’s best to get the jack screw pads rested just before you launch the boat to avoid risking having your boat slip on its jacks.

9 There is now a green masking tape available for your water line, which will help leave a much crisper edge. But it still pays to brush from the tape downward to avoid forcing any coating up under the tape, leaving a ragged edge. Then pull the tape off before the coating dries. You don’t want to glue the tape on, requiring scraping to remove it later.

10 Bottom painting is not so hard on your back if you can get an angle on it. Select a handle that fits the angle to the center, then change to a length that fits the mid-sections and then one for the curve up. This usually means long handles moving toward shorter handles.

11 Have some fairing compound handy; there will inevitably be a few gouges, and it’s easy to fill them right away. A quick-dry epoxy works well especially when drying is accelerated with a hair dryer.

12 Your boat bottom coating may be a two-part mixture or may have copper or other additives that don’t hold in suspension well. Use 200 strokes in order to mix thoroughly before applying the finish. Sanding well will assure that you get the best adhesion and most uniform application of the solids that will remain on the bottom of the boat.

13 Brush the tight areas first so that the roller can smooth any drips that result.

14 A short stool or adjustable stool that can be lowered and raised to fit the angle you want can make your back a lot happier when coating your boat bottom.

15 Most roller frames are threaded and having a few handles cut to different lengths can help. You can also get telescoping handles. Not only can you coat more quickly, but you can also avoid being dripped on.

16 A pail with a roller screen in it can work better than a roller tray. Moving the pail is safe and quick because they are deep so sloshing won’t affect them. Also, long handles mean you can often set the pail on the ground to dip saving a lot of time and effort.

17 I like to apply the roller just one direction, bottom to top, and overlap just a little. This will help avoid pulling any wet coat off and also limits air bubbles that two-way motions can put into some coatings.

18 Using an airless sprayer can do a great job but then you have particles in the air so be careful of your neighbors’ boats and equipment. And don’t forget that you will need to clean that sprayer and lines when you are done.

Tautog, also know as Blackfish, are extremely tough fighters and very sneaky fish that can be difficult to catch.   However, they are great on the dinner table.  We will go over some useful information about how to catch these fish.

Anchor Retrieval System
A good anchor system uses two ropes, one attached to the front of the anchor, and the usual anchor rope attached to the back of the anchor.  The rope attached to the front should have a small buoy on it.   When you drop the anchor make sure the ropes don’t wrap each other, as this will defeat the purpose of the second rope.  When it comes time to pull the anchor up, motor up carefully to the buoy, bringing in the other rope as you approach, then grap the buoy and pull the anchor in the rest of the way using the buoy rope.  This pulls the anchor from the front, pulling it right out o the bottom and any rocks it may have been stuck under. 

Boat Handling
It is necessary to anchor the boat over the rocky structure that Tautog prefer.  This can sometimes be very difficult, if you don’t get over the structure you wont be catching any fish.  Once you get the boat anchored, remember that an area can be fished out, so it is necessary to let out anchor line as you fish to cover new ground.  Make sure that you are anchored so that letting out line wll still place you over structure.

Rigging
Tautog like to hide among rock piles and it isn’t unusual to lose a lot of rigs when fishing for them.  We use a very simple rig which helps reduce the loss of tackle to a minimum.  A simple monofilament leader with a loop is tied onto the line and then a hook with a leader is tied to this length of mono leader, with the hook able to hang down to the level of the loop.  Then we tie a small loop with 12lb test mono, these are used to attach the sinker to the leader loop.  This lighter sinker loop will break before the main leader does, and it is the sinker that often gets hung up with this rig, since it hangs down below the hook.  This way you usually only lose sinkers.

 Bait
We use crabs for bait.  It is easy for us to catch them at the dock and is doesn’t matter what kind they are (except for spider crabs, we don’t use them).   Most of the time we remove the legs, claws, and cut the crab in half, then remove the upper shell before placing it on the hook.  If it is a very large crab we will cut the halves in half and use quarters

Fishing
Let your baited rig down to the bottom.  It is necessary to keep the line tight so you may feel the hit, otherwise the bait can be lost with no clue to the fact that there was a bite.  If the boat is swinging back and forth, do not let the rig drag across the bottom, this will hang it up for sure.  Always lift it off the bottom and let it back down as the boat moves.   Banging the sinker on the bottom will make noise which can bring the tautog in to investigate.

The Bite
With Tautog, you will often feel the tap-tap-taps and will want to instantly try to set the hook.  This does not usually work, you need to wait until you feel the taps become tugs, then try setting the hook.  If the fish is hooked, get him away from the bottom as quickly as you can so he can’t get hung up in the rocks.  Remember not to lift the head out of the water as you try to net the fish, this is a good way to lose him.

When to Fish
In the fall when the tautog bite is really on you can catch a lot of fish, and they can be pretty easy to hook.  During the spring and summer, they are not so aggressive and tautog fishing can be somewhat frustrating.  Late October and early November are usually the best times to fish for them.  Time of day is not usually an issue, far more important is tide, which needs to be running for the bite to be on.  Slack tide in not usually very good.

Lake Kissimmee is the largest of five main water impoundments on the Kissimmee River in central Florida. Lake Kissimmee fishing Reports consistently put this lake on the national map as one of the best largemouth lakes in the nation. The lake has been revitalized in the past decade with implants of more beneficial vegetation. These changes created new critical spawning areas for the the largemouth , and other fish species.
Lake Kissimmee is located east of the City of Lake Wales in the heart of Osceola County.

We will list 12 Area’s on or around the lake that have been known to hold black. You can also visit the Florida Fish and wildlife conservation commission http://myfwc.com/fishing/forecast/ webpage and click on Interactive maps to get more detail information.

Area #1 Kissimmee Fishing Lake Report The Highway 60 bridge area on the south end of Lake Kissimmee produces largemouth bass, crappie and catfish in summer. This spot is excellent when the S-65 lock is open and water is moving out. For bass, fish deep water around the bridge pilings with plastic worms and deep-diving crankbaits. Crappie prefer deep, cool water around the bridge during summer. Minnows and jigs are your best bet.

Area #2 The area between the Shady Oaks Fish Camp and the Highway 60 bridge provides good spring bass action on plastic worms and craws, topwaters and Rat-L-Traps.. Work the old river channel, marked by scattered grass outcroppings. This is a good spring spawning area for bass. In summer, flip plastic worms, rigged Florida-style with a screw in bullet sinker, along the edges of the vegetation. Look for schooling bass in June and July.

Area #3 Lake Kissimmee Fishing Report This is the prime spawning area on the south end of the lake. Fish the shallows with spinnerbaits, plastic worms, craws and jerk baits in late winter and early spring.

Area #4 This deep-water break off the east side of Brahma Island drops into 6 foot depths, creating holes in the vegetative cover. Work the cover for bass in the summer and again in late fall for shallow fish, staging for spawning.

Area #5 During summer, work jerkbaits, plastic worms, vibrating plugs and spinnerbaits for bass along the southeast corner of Brahma Island. Cast around hydrilla and the edges of the drop-offs along the cut. Depths vary from 2 to 8 feet and average 4 to 5 feet off the main channel.

Area #6 The cut behind Brahma Island, extending between Rocky Point and Otter Slough, is a good spot for summer bass. Throw topwater lures early and late in the day along the edge of lily pads and scattered hydrilla. When the sun is high, flip the pads around the weed transitions.

Area #7
The westernmost point of Brahma Island has a good drop off marked by lily pads and hydrilla growth. Work topwater bass lures early in the day along the edges of the hydrilla. Switch to lipless vibration lures and plastic jerk baits, worms and craws as the sun moves higher. Work the cut toward Otter Slough, casting the hydrilla seams and pockets.

Area #8Kissimmee Lake Fishing Report This small cove is called Polluted Waters but, in spite of the name, the water is not polluted. Fish weedless spoons and plastic worms to the cover at the mouth of the cove. Spring and summer are prime times. Flipping works best along the line of maidencane and Kissimmee grass.

Area #9 Shallows on the northwest shore of Brahma Island attract spawning bass in late winter and early spring. Work the inside of the outer grassline with weedless plastics. In summer, flip the outside edges of the grassline.

Area #10Report Lake Kissimmee Fishing Scattered lilypads and Kissimmee grass hold bass most of the year. Use topwaters early around the scattered grass patches then work the heaviest cover with weedless plastics.

Area #11 Jack’s Slough produces bass in late spring and summer. Vegetation edges are especially good after a rain, which increases the current from Jackson Creek. Retrieve plastic worms, jerk baits, spoons and spinnerbaits around the vegetation and contours at the mouth of the inlet. Live shiners will bring out the big bass.

Area #12 Scattered grass in 4 to 7 feet in the Three Oaks area attract bass. Cast spoons, topwater plugs or buzz baits along the outside grassline early in the year. Bass spawn in the nearby shallows in early spring. This is also a prime spawning spot for bluegill and redear.

Rather than buying Your own burley why not make it? Burley is essential for attracting fish when you are fishing. A constant stream of burley ensures a constant stream of fish.

Here are 5 tips on how to make Your own burley…

1- Buy a food processor to blend any old bread that you have into a fine bread crumb mixture. This is the perfect base for any burley. Remember to process it nice and fine otherwise it will be more like a meal for a fish rather than an appetiser.

2- Add fish oil to the mix. Fish oil can be bought from most supermarkets or fishing stores. You can also make your own fish oil but this takes a bit of preparation and time.

3- Add your old bait to the mixture. Rather than disposing of your old bait, process it into a fine paste and add to the mixture. Old shrimp heads, octopus, squid, whitebait or the remains of any fish product you have eaten are perfect (even the remains of any fish that you catch and eat).

4- Add any other food you have. Most foods are great for attracting fish. Once again be sure to process it into a fine powder or paste. Foods like salami, ham, chicken etc. are ideal. Even the carcass of a whole chicken can be added to a burley mixture (just don’t try to blend this in the food processor).

5- You can then place the burley mixture into a container and freeze for when you need it. You don’t need to defrost the mixture before using it. You can simply put the iceblock into a cage and throw it directly into the water. Some people like to freeze the mixture in an old plastic milk container and either leave in the water with the lid off or cut it open when they need it.

This mixture is great for attracting hundreds of fish and saving hundreds of dollars. Why not try it today?

Jig fishing for walleye is my favorite way to catch them and spring is my favorite time of year to do it.

I like to find a spot where a river or decent sized stream is flowing into a proven walleye lake.

A fish finder helps put the location on good structure and helps locate the walleye. You want to get fairly close to the river mouth but not so close you can’t set anchor.

You also want to get close to the drop off but not so close you can’t cast a few feet. Weeds should be growing in the shallows before the drop off. This gives walleye a place to hide so they can easily ambush their prey and hopefully your jig or bait.

Usually walleye feed right off the bottom but sometimes they suspend above this area. This is another good reason to use a graph. You don’t want to waste time trying to figure out what depth the walleye suspending.

Once anchored up I like to cast toward the shallow side of the drop off and slowly reel in until my line falls directly down beside the boat.

Then I let my line drop to the bottom and reel up to the depth the walleye are suspending.

It’s a good idea to see how much line one 360 degree crank on the reel draws up before you get in the boat.  If it brings in 1 foot of per crank line and the fish are 3 feet off the bottom you slowly reel 3 times around and there you go.

You have to slowly jig or lift your rod tip up and down to display proper presentation as walleye are real finicky about it.

If the walleye are 3 feet off the bottom I set my rig about 1.5 feet off the bottom. I lift my rod tip up about 2 feet then lower it back down. I keep doing this until I get a hit.

You will find you usually feel the hit when you are bringing your rod tip back up. The walleye are actually hitting the jig on its way down. When you lift the rod tip up is when you usually notice the fish is on the bite.

As soon as you feel the slightest bit of resistance you must set the hook, and I mean quickly. If you don’t set the hook immediately you are likely going to miss your walleye.

There are all kinds of jigs on the market. Most work well but color does matter from day to day and even hour to hour.

The jig head color isn’t extremely important but the tail color is. I like to use twister tails on a normal jig head and a little walleye scent don’t hurt.

I find a 3/8 oz jig head works well in a fair current but if the current is somewhat swift I go with a 1/2 oz jig head.

I often attach a spinner to the jig head. It seems to induce more strikes than a plain jig. But you never know if it’s the daily special or not so you just have to try it and see.

Another jig that works great is Northlands’ Mimic Minnow. They come in different sizes.

An introduction into making especially effective buoyant Hook baits for Catfish and carp:

As you are rolling all your paste into balls before boiling as you would to Make boiled carp or Catfish baits, put aside, maybe 50 paste dough pieces, for use as ‘buoyant’ Hook baits; these are excellent great for specially attractive purposes!

They can be great fished on their own over weed or silt, or as a ‘snowman’ when used on the hair or Hook with a normal sinking boilie, or used on a variety of hook rigs from the water surface, at mid – water, or on and just off the bottom etc; in fact everywhere you might find a feeding carp or hunting catfish!

You can incorporate a piece of cork, or small balls of polystyrene into these dough pieces or even use a high amount of cork granules in a dedicated base mix, to adjust the amount of buoyancy of hook baits you want. These are available from the commercial companies too. The advantage with these is that your hook baits are identical in nutritional makeup and signal leak – off to your ‘free’ or ground baits.

Another method is to put a small number of smaller, normal baits on a plate, and microwave them in time increments of, e.g. 20 seconds, removing them before they begin to burn. These are soaked in attractors before use, to maximize attraction.

Another method is to adjust the level of ingredients until you arrive at a floating test bait. I’ve also had this happen by accident, and not design while experimenting with more buoyant ingredients like sodium caseinate, shrimp and krill meals, even some egg biscuit based bird foods, for example.

I use casein as the base with sodium caseinate and then other ingredients, as this offers great nutritional signals, while being a harder more resilient bait. You can buy ‘pop-up’ base mixes too from Nutrabaits, Rod Hutchinson, Solar Baits, etc. Again, these baits are left to soak in an extract / flavor / amino acid compound, for example, to harden, preserve, and maximize carp attraction.

Such baits fished just on their own on hard fished waters can be very productive, especially casting immediately to ‘rolling, and ‘head and shouldering’ carp!

Making great ‘floater cake’ bait:

The easiest method of mass producing personalized, random shaped nutritional floating bait is:

Make your base mix as normal but with much more buoyant ingredient, like 6 ounces per pound of sodium caseinate. Adding shrimp meal or krill meal will have the same effect and these are great proven nutritional attractors in themselves.

Add 2 extra eggs per pound dry mix (with bicarbonate of soda to put more air bubbles into it to help it float if necessary), leaving the mix more liquid than solid. Whisk the mix, and pour into a baking tray, and cook in the oven until risen and just brown on top.

A good trick is to use a high level of ground-up dog or cat food biscuits in your floater cake ; like ‘Pedigree Chum’. These baits work great on waters where carp regularly eat these biscuits as free baits, and have previously been caught. Such big fish are usually much more difficult to hook, on the biscuits themselves as bait, even though all ‘free’ biscuits are eaten, hook baits may be rejected. Very frustrating for the angler!

Hooks are hooks in most anglers’ minds. They figure they either need a big one or a small one, depending on the fish they are pursuing. Lots of anglers go through life completely missing the importance of using not only the right size sea Hook, but probably most importantly the right type of sea Hook.

It’s not just pure fishing luck that makes the difference in all sea anglers catching more than you. Most of the time it’s the Hook choice you make on the day. A thick forged Hook is not the right choice for small fish, fish with small mouths or soft lipped fish. A thin Aberdeen wire hook that can penetrate quickly in the inside of the mouth would be a better choice however you would also need a hook that holds its strength and shape.

Hook size is probably the first thing a sea angler should think of when buying hooks. Most are smart enough to know which hook is the right size for the fish they are after but it takes experience. sizes from most manufacturers range from the very smallest freshwater trout hook at a number 32, to the very largest game fish hook at 19/0.

The size breakdown from smallest to largest looks like this:32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 11, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0, 6/0, 7/0, 8/0, 9/0, 10/0, 11/0, 12/0, 13/0, 14/0, 15/0, 16/0, 17/0, 18/0, and 19/0.

They are generally made from shaped wire. Unlike the O’Shaughnessy, it can and does bend. It can be bent back into shape several times before it becomes too weak. However, once a fish is hook and the barb has completely penetrated, this hook holds very well. These hooks are modified with bends in their shanks for use in jig molds.

CIRCLE
Perhaps the best innovation in hooks to come along, circle hooks promote healthy catch and release. The design of the hook itself, when used properly, prevents fish from being hooked in the gut. Many sea anglers have a problem using these hooks because they require no hook set. If you do try to set the hook, it will generally come out of the mouth of the fish. These hooks are designed to move to the corner of the fish’s mouth and set themselves as the fish swims away from you. Anglers feel a bite and simply begin reeling, slowly at first, then faster as the hook gets set.

LIVE BAIT
These hooks generally have a shorter shank than other hooks. Whether that is to allow the live bait to swim more freely or to be less apparent to the fish is debatable. My vote is to allow the bait to swim more freely. These hooks come in regular and circle designs. Regular live bait hooks will be swallowed and result in gut hooks most of the time. Circle live bait hooks provide a greater chance for a good release.

BAITHOLDER
Baitholder Hooks – These are very widely used by sea anglers. These are good hooks for worm bait they have a ringed eye and have 2 slices or barbs in the shank to assist with holding the bait up the shank of the hook.

KAHLE
The curve on these hooks makes them ideal for live bait. Made from the same wire as the Aberdeen hooks, they will bend if hung on the bottom of some structure. However, once a fish is hooked, the design of the hook prevents it from being straightened.
Hook Choice!

First, use common sense. As simple as that may sound, I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen people make some really bad hook choices. Match the hook size with the fish!
Second, use some trial and error and learn from your mistakes. No one became a good fisherman overnight. All of us had to learn either from someone else or by trial and error.
Thirdly, get a good brand of hook, such as Sakuma or Mustad. Try to avoid cheap hooks for the reason that they are just not up for the job, you don’t want to let that fish of a life time get away because of a crap hook bend out on you! If you are going to spend any money on Terminal tackle you hooks should be the number one first choice.

My personal favourites are Sakuma Singers and Mustad Worm hooks for flatfish and Mustad Aberdeen and Ultra Point Bass Hooks for Bottom Fishing for Huss off the rocks where a stronger hook is needed but a larger gape for bigger baits is required.

Finally, to all of you who are new to fishing, try taking these examples and build your learning experiences upon them. Trial and error are often the best teachers in any skill.

Carp fishing is one of the most popular forms of freshwater fishing. Carp fishing combines the excitement of fishing in a freshwater arena with the potential to catch sizable fish. For those who are entertaining the idea of fishing and are looking to catch the big one, carp fishing may be exactly what you are looking for. However, before embarking on your fishing journey, you should be aware that there are a few items to take along. These items will ensure the fisherman or woman a fun filled trip without headaches and stress.

Carp Rods and Reels

Due to their aggressive manner and sheer size you will need a sturdy rod  for carp fishing. The rod should be between eight to twelve feet long and have the ability to handle large game. Medium to heavy action rods are best – you’ll find this designation is listed near the grip of the rod. The reel needs to also be able to hold at least 150 meters of 6 kilogram test line. This is about the smallest gauge line that one should have on a carp reel. Carp can grow over thirty or even forty pounds and sharp rocks or bottom structure can easily snap off larger fish. Along with a good net, one should also carry needle nose pliers. These pliers will allow the angler to release a hook that has been partially digested without too much damage to the fish.

Because carp are not generally taken for food, most carp should be released quickly so that they will live.

A wide variety of baits are used when fishing for carp. One of the cheapest and most readily available forms of bait is corn from a can. Canned corn can be found at any supermarket – it’is cheap and makes great bait for carp. Anything from chicken livers, hot dogs, and breads that will stay on a hook can be used to catch carp.

For fishing for filter feeding varieties, use circle hooks. These will keep the fish from deep hooking itself as they allow the carp to digest the bait –  the hook will not attach itself until it brushes against the lip of the carp.

The most common tackle for coarse fishing is the rod and reel. A rod is a hollow, light weight tube which is typically between 8 and 13 feet long. It is typically made of carbon fiber or fiberglass. The reel is attached at the base of the rod and is the apparatus used to manage the fishing line allowing the angler to cast the bait out and retrieve it. The rod and reel allows the fisherman to control where the bait goes, how quickly it moves in the water, and ensures that he or she has leverage during the catch..

Also common in coarse fishing are fishing “poles.” With these there is no use of a reel to retrieve the fishing line. Instead the line is attached to the end of the pole, which is then extended to the desired length. In order to retrieve the line, the poles are brought in and taken apart until the line is within reach. In order to gain decent range, the poles are often very long, measuring up to 16 meters. The use of poles can be advantageous in certain situations where the angler can place the bait very specifically.

In addition to these main fishing tools, there are a variety of other types of tackle that can be used. Fishing line is a strong nylon thread that attaches to the bait or lure, and also to the pole or rod. The thickness can vary depending on the size of fish anticipated. There are also hooks, floats, sinkers, nets, stringers, spears, types of live bait, artificial bait, lures, and even boxes in which to keep everything, called a tackle box.

2.Excellent  fly casting is not based on strength but it is based on correct timing. A fly caster needs to practice the proper timing of the cast to become a good. How much should you practice? About 15 minutes per day over a month should make you an excellent fly caster.

3.Correct casting motion and stopping the motion of the rod are essential to proper casting. This is where timing comes into play. The fly caster “loads” the energy into the rod when performing the casting movement. The fly rod releases the built up power onto the line and the line is cast forward.  When the rod is bent by the weight of the line, this is the “loading” phase. Then the equal and opposite reaction forces the rod to bend the other direction, pulling the line with it. False casting, the back and forth motions prior to releasing the actual cast, are used to load the rod, aim the cast and occasionally to dry off your fly. When this is performed with good timing the cast is successful and the rod propels the line and fly in the proper direction.

4.Casting arcs (the angles of the rod in the air as you cast) are small for short casts and slightly larger for longer a cast. However many beginners and even experienced fly casters use too wide a casting arc. The terms ten o’clock to two o’clock are often recommended. Ten to two is fine but also often misunderstood or over exaggerated. I like to modify that to ten to twelve thirty as many caster tend to bring the rod too far back. Stopping the rod as you bring it up, allow the line to back cast until it is straight, then push the rod forward will create a good forward cast.

5. Watch your back cast. This is very important, even for experienced casters. In many actual fishing applications you will want to watch it so you avoid trees and bushes. Generally you want to keep it relatively high. When it straightens out it will impart a bend on the rod, then push it forward in the power stroke, aiming at your target.

6.Stop the rod after the forward casting motion, (and after your release of the line). This is vital to shooting the line forward. As the rod is pushed forward to the ten o’clock position stop applying power but then tilt the rod tip down slightly, toward a horizontal position. This allows the line to slide out forward with less friction between the rod and rod guides. Any excess line held in your non-casting hand should be released during the forward power stroke.

In a lot of freshwater fly fishing situations you do not need to cast very far. Often 50 feet is sufficient., But learning to cast longer can help improve your casting in general, sometimes it is the only way to reach a feeding fish and it is just plan fun. As you improve your casting the greater distance comes naturally.

Standard wooden tip-ups involve two attached wooden pieces with an upright center wood rod.  The center piece has a fishing reel which sits under the water level and is loaded with braided ice fishing line plus a monofiliment leader and a baited hook. Live bait minnows such as shiners are commonly used. The reel is put under the water level to prevent it from freezing.   A wire trip device leading from the reel holds a small red or orange flag and once  a fish hits the bait and the reel rotates the flag pops up and alerts the fishermen.  This is when the fish may get caught or it might get away. Wood tip-up models are usually the most cost-effective although more elaborate types are available as well.  Using tip-ups for ice fishing has long been part of ice fishing history, going back a long time in history. It is believed that this form of fish trap was used by early Native Americans who ice fished for food. This would make tip-ups among the very first types of ice fishing tackle.

Fifty years ago, along with his “hard water” angling gear, the only real device an ice fisherman needed  was an axe to chop a hole in the ice.  Nowadays products have advanced significantly.  Gas powered augers are the norm while hand held augers and ice chipping chisels are also used.  Most ice fishermen have some type of sled to use to drag all their equipment across the frozen lake to their favorite fishing location. This greatly adds to the convenience and a properly supplied ice sled will make your day on the ice that much more enjoyable. The basic equipment listed in this article is not always required however it can make your fishing a bit more pleasurable and productive.  Fishing out on the ice isn’t for everyone but for those who enjoy getting out on a winter’s day it can be a wonderful and safe activity.

Good morning. Here’s the outer Banks Beach, Surf, & Fishing Report for Friday, January 28, 2011. This video was shot in Kitty Hawk at "Lucky Tides" at 9:30 AM. Beautiful day. Bright sun, blue skies, and a light west wind at about 10 MPH. The temps will be in the 50′s today, and the sun and warm temps will stay with us for the weekend. The light west wind is keeping the surf real clean. We’ve had good surf the past couple days. Head high and clean on Wednesday, but the weather was rainy and overcast. Waist to chest yesterday. The swell should be dieing down, but today is bigger than I expected. Still fun waist high waves with some shoulder high sets coming through. Great fishing still going on. A lot of reports of boats out of Oregon Inlet getting their limit of stripers. The past couple days have been slow because the boats couldn’t get out due to the fog, but they will be back at it today with the great weather. Unfortunately, still no reports of rock catches in the surf…but the year is still young. I mentioned this on Wednesday, and I’ll probably keep mentioning it until July, but we have some fun fishing news getting attention. A group on FaceBook, Obx Fishing, has taken the initiative to start a movement to set two Guinness World records on the Outer Banks pertaining to fishing. 1. Most people surf fishing at one time and 2. largest fishing tournament. Guinness accepted their application yesterday, and the date is set for Sunday, July 3rd. We hope y’all can get <b>…</b>
