I’ve found that the best way to surf fish for pompano on the Gulf of Mexico in the panhandle of Florida is with a medium surf fishing rod and a pompano rig with two gold circle hooks and flourescent beads. The very best bait is the sandflea, also known as a mole crab. They can be found in the sand in the shallows where the surf is breaking. To catch them a metal grated sandflea rake is best, but any kind of metal strainer will catch them.

Good morning. Here’s your OBX Moment of Zen for Friday, March 23, 2012. This video was shot at the Kitty Hawk Pier at 8:00 AM. Doesn’t get much nicer than this. Warm sun, not a cloud in the sky, light offshore breeze, and temps reaching 80! Lovin’ spring! The weekend will be more of the same. A few scattered thunder showers, but mostly sun with temps in the 70′s. There is a tiny wave out there. At the right spot there could be a pretty longboard wave…and the perfect day to be out there. The offshore breeze will stick around through Sunday. Outer Banks fishing continues to be slow, but water temps are up to 57 and the piers are opening for the season. Spring fish should be here soon. Pretty spring day, and great spring weather to close out the week. 70′s, sun, light southwest wind through Sunday. A chance of some scattered thunderstorms, but sun will be the norm. Not much surf to report. There is a little swell, and the wind will stay offshore through Sunday, so if you can find the right spot, there could be a longboard wave. OBX fishing is slow, but piers are opening and the water temps are warming up. Spring fish should be here soon. Nice to see you. We’re still a few days away from the official start of spring, but spring had sprung on the OBX. Warm sun, blue skies, light offshore breeze out of the southwest at 5 mph, and 70 degrees. Spring perfection. And this gorgeous weather will stick with us through the weekend. Not much swell in the area, but the light offshore breeze is cleaning up a knee high longboard wave nicely. This longboard wave should be with us through Saturday. OBX fishing continues to be slow – skate and dog fish at Jennette’s Pier and tuna offshore – but warm water is on the way, and that means spring fish are on the way too.
